We are involved in "Ex-Dolly" contemporary dance performance as the publication designer. We conceptualized and design all the publication pieces including the video teasers.
The performance itself is about the closing of Gang Dolly (Dolly Alley) the biggest red district area in South East Asia which was placed in Pasar Kembang, Surabaya. The closing sparked some few controversies, especially from the workers inside the area. This contemporary dance shows the struggles of being an Ex-Dolly, how they try to cope with their new lives.
We wanted a strong photo to convey the message for the publication. It should evoke the feeling of desolation, struggle, but on the other hand also need to show strength and hard work of the person; they are working for their lives. We also wanted it to show the urban-feeling in it.
We wanted a strong pose, but also a natural one. In the end, we narrowed down the option to these two.
Then we go with this one. The publication pieces (except the poster) show different parts of the full image. Each part has its own message to convey, but for one to understand it fully, that person should look for the whole picture. The same message that the performance also brings: To understand it all, one should look to the big picture.
